The more knowledgeable the players are with the necessity to go for rebounds, the more likely they will score with this second chance. The more rebounds a team provides in attack, the more likely it will be to win a match.

It is generally tougher for attackers to take advantage of a rebound than for defenders. At the second the ball rebounds off the post or off the goalkeeper, the defenders closer to the goal usually outnumber the attackers.

In order to reap the benefits of rebounds in attacks, a striker should have specific skills, one of the most essential of these skills being speed.

  • Reaction speed.
  • The capacity of acceleration.
  • Mental quickness or speed in decision making.
  • An ambitious mindset.
  • Determination to get at the ball ahead of the defenders.

Additionally, they need a great level of;

  • Agility.
  • Flexibility in the tendons, muscles, and mind.
  • Good range of motion in the joints

These are all of great importance and help to get the ball inside a very restricted area where there is little room and time to make a move.

Finally, the ability to predict the possible results of this goal attempt will make the difference between reaching the rebound first or not.

This scenario is best produced by having exposure to a good variety of simple games by which real game situations appear over and over, and of course, during matches.

To achieve a good percentage of success in taking rebounds, it’s best that at least two attackers, from different angles approach. The attacker should try to cover as much range as possible and never come too close to the goalkeeper because rebounding is easier once the soccer ball drops in-front as opposed to behind the attacker.

The defenders also need to avoid clearing the soccer ball over the front of the goal since any error can become a benefit for the opposition.

Where goalkeepers are concerned, one of the primary blunders they can make is diving without due cause. When forced to go on the ground, they are in a vulnerable position; as for the opposition’s attackers, it’s easy to kick the rebounded ball over the goalkeeper’s arms and into the goal to get a win.

Both the defenders and the goalkeepers must clear the ball wide in the direction of spots uncovered or less operated by the competitors, and, if possible, towards their wings (never towards the central areas.)

Usually, in youth soccer coaching, coaches do not work on rebounding from missed shots. This is very over-looked and can alter the outcome of many matches. In youth soccer, many goalkeepers do not work on strengthening their hands enough to catch and keep a powerful strike.

Conclusion

Over half of the shots on the goal produce a rebound possibility. If you are searching for a technique to generate more goals during games, look to see how to get your players to rebound better all around the goal.

There are numerous exercises that will help your team with rebounding, so find the ones that work best for your team and run them once a week.

Alternatively, if you are training solo or practicing with a very small team you might be able to make use of a rebounder or rebound net.

Just get creative with it.
